How a Grid-Tied Solar Electricity System Works

Grid tied solar

Solar PV panels mounted on your roof or near your house capture energy from the sun and convert this energy into DC electricity.

A Solar Inverter converts this DC electricity into 230V AC electricity for use in your home.

The main switchboard takes electricity from the solar power inverter and sends this electricity to power your home. If excess solar electricity is produced this is exported to the national grid and most electricity retailers will credit you for this. If not enough solar electricity is being produced, then it will be imported from the grid, like at night. Solar electricity systems are particularly beneficial to residential homes running items such as swimming and spa pools with electric pumps, air conditioning units, underfloor heating, electric hot water cylinders, deep freezers, water pumps or large irrigation systems. All of these can be set to operate during the daytime when your solar system will be producing electricity.
